Our
Story
It all started with a dream ... and a little encouragement from the California District Convention, the predecessor of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod. In August 1956, the Convention formed the Northern California Home for the Aged Project, to act on a growing need.
It would be another eight years of planning before the historic opening of the Sunny View Lutheran Home, but on May 17, 1964, Dr. Gaylerd Falde performed a spirited dedication service to a capacity audience. And on June 1, the very first nine joyful residents moved into Sunny View, with another 11 eager people on the waiting list.
Fifteen years later, Sunny View turned its eyes ‘westward’ and opened the doors of Sunny View West, an independent affordable housing community serving low-income seniors.
Today, Sunny View Retirement Community is part of Front Porch Communities and Services, one of the largest non-profit senior services organizations in California. Front Porch continues Sunny View’s rich tradition and mission of meeting the housing needs of seniors.
Front Porch partner, Sunny View Lutheran Communities and Services also supports the retirement community and Sunny View West through its volunteer Auxiliary, chaplaincy, Sunny View Center for Aging and Spirituality and the philanthropic Sunny View Foundation.
